There was a little bit of everything, ranging from economics, social history and naval history with just enough detail on some topics leaving you wanting to know yet more. The talk was well attended and all there will have left with their own highlights. These are just some of mine.
Dr Tony Barrow
The history of our region and the sea was covered from the mesolithic house at Howick, through Roman times (Arbeia), medieval monasteries, the industrial revolution, to World War 2 and beyond; taking in the long span of coastline from Berwick to Yorkshire. There was a little bit of everything, ranging from economics, social history and naval history with just enough detail on some topics leaving you wanting to know yet more. The talk was well attended and all there will have left with their own highlights. These are just some of mine. Under, 'ports and harbours', we were introduced to the medieval port of Warkworth, painted by Turner in 1799, Seaton Sluice, almost unchanged from its days as a thriving coal port in the 18th century, and an aerial view of the lower River Tyne, with developments spanning 1000 years.

The next meeting of Heddon on the Wall Local History Society will be held on Monday 14 February in the Methodist Chapel at 7:30pm featuring a talk entitled 'Northumbrian Ports & Harbours' by Dr Tony Barrow. Seaton Sluice Harbour (2009). Dr. Tony Barrow M.Ed, Ph.D, a local marine historian, taught in secondary, further and higher education until his retirement in 2007. He still teaches part-time as an associate lecturer of the Open University and visiting lecturer of Sunderland University. He is widely published on many aspects of the maritime history of north east England. Dr. Barrow is the author of (among others): Collingwood’s Northumbrians (2009) Trafalgar Geordies and North Country Seamen of Nelson's Navy 1793-1815 (2005) The Whaling Trade of North-east England 1750-1850 (2001) Walks Around the Old Coal Ports of Northumberland: Seaton Sluice, Blyth and Amble (1992) Walks Around the Old Grain Ports of Northumberland: Alnmouth, Seahouses and Berwick (1995) If Google, Wikipedia & Amazon are to be believed (and they have been used extensively on this site) a Tony Barrow has also written several books about the Beatles. Clearly a man of many talents. This could be interesting in many ways. |
