Heddon's history timeline 2000 onwards

The Heddon history time-line is based on work by Pat Farnaby for his previous village web site.

2000 - 2010

2000    Heddon Butterfly Haven completed as a community project on part of Heddon Common
2000    Wylam Brewery set up by in May 2000 by John Boyle and Robin Leighton in a disused dairy near Heddon on the Wall. They have a nice line in historical beer-mats.
2001    Heddon was in the national limelight following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in the village
2001    September 11th 2001 ('9/11')  a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda on the United States
2001    Gateshead Millennium Bridge opened
2001    Heddon village was best large village in the Northumbria in Bloom competition
2002    Heddon village was best large village in the Northumbria in Bloom competition
2003    Iraq War started March 20, 2003
2003   Opening of Hadrian's Wall National Trail a long distance footpath of 135 km (84 miles), from Wallsend on the east coast to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. The route from Newcastle climbs from the River Tyne to join the line of the Wall at Heddon bringing many new visitors through the village.
2004   Abacus children’s nursery opened Nov 1st 2004 in old Co-op building with places for 43 children
2004   Newcastle University sold Close House Mansion and estate, to local business man Graham Wylie
2004   Start of successful reintroduction of Red Kites in Derwent Valley, Gateshead
2007    'Words from the Wall' was a community initiated project between the local heritage group and primary school. This year long project worked with 32  six/seven year olds to reflect local history through oral history recordings that were then transferred into a brief piece of animation.
2008   Swan Inn closed for 10 weeks for refurbishment and extension, reopening in May as a Carvery.
2009    New unitary council for Northumberland, combining the former county council and six district councils
2009   Barn fire at Heddon Haugh Farm, 9 August 2009. Flames rose 50ft high and a plume of smoke drifted up to around 150ft high. At the height of the blaze, six fire appliances plus a high volume pumping tender and around 40 firefighters were involved in tackling it.
2009   Heddon Village Show Silver Jubilee on 9 September 2009
2009   World Pheasant Association moved from its previous base in Hampshire to Newcastle University's biology field station at Close House near Heddon on the Wall.
2009   Graham Wylie revealed plans for a £7.5m development at Close House Hotel and Golf Course near Heddon-on-the-Wall. The plans include a new golf academy and a championship-length course which would attract players from round the world.
2009   New sports field purchased and set up at East Heddon for Heddon St Andrews Football Club. The Parish Council named it 'The Selman Sports Field' in memory of Dr Brian Selman, Chairman of the Parish Council from 1979 until his death in August 2009.

2010 - 2020

2010   Telefonica O2 granted permission to erect a 27.5m-high lattice tower and base station at West Heddon.
2010    In April, ITV filmed a wedding scene in the Knott Hall for Joe Maddison’s War starring Robson Green, Kevin Whately and Melanie Hill
2010   Heddon Library reopened 5 March 2010 after refurbishment and transfer from County Council to Heddon on the Wall Community, and staffed by village volunteers
2010   Illuminating Hadrian's Wall created a line of light from coast to coast on Saturday 13 March.
2010   Amos Bros., Roman Wall Forge building put up for sale at a guide price of £300,000. The agents brochure says "...undoubtedly offer considerable potential for redevelopment subject to appropriate planning consents".
2010   Opening of new Golf Academy and Driving Range at Close House
2010   Heddon Methodist Church forced to hold services in an adjacent schoolroom since part of the 133-year-old ceiling suddenly fell in in November 2010. Insurers refused to pay out, classing the damage as natural wear and tear.

2011    Renovation of former stable block to provide extended accommodation at Close House
2011    New 18 hole championship golf course opened after construction on former agricultural land around Close House. New Golf Clubhouse due to open Spring 2011.
2011    Friday 29th April 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Most people have the day off work (an additional Bank Holiday). Social events were held at both the Swan & Three Tuns pubs.
2011   Re-formation of the Heddon Brownie pack after a gap of 15 years.
2011   U.F.O. drops aviation fuel on road, front and back gardens of Aquila Drive, Heddon on the  Wall on  Monday 10 October 2011. Confirmed as aviation fuel by the Fire Service. Investigation instigated at airport. Although this story was widely reported in the local, national and aviation press, an aeroplane fuel spill was denied by the authorities, in lieu of a positive aircraft identification, and suggested a broken hydraulic line on a visiting (but unseen) lorry.
2011    Final closure and sale of Amos Bros. Roman Wall Forge ending a history of over 120 years in the village.

2012

2012    Jubilee Festival of Flowers 21-25 June opened by the Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev. Martin Wharton 
2012    Heddon Hall Estate for sale at a price of £1.5 million
2012    Detatched house built on the location of the Roman Wall Forge, to the rear of the Library.

2013    Heddon on the Wall Memorial Park awarded
'thriving' in RHS It's Your Neighbourhood Awards 2013 by Northumbria in Bloom at a ceremony in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on 17th September.

2014    Heddon on the Wall Memorial Park awarded 'outstanding' in RHS It's Your Neighbourhood Awards 2014 by Northumbria in Bloom at a ceremony in the
The Brandling Suite, High Gosforth Park on Tuesday 16th September.

2014   
Plans submitted to Northumberland County Council to turn the Close House into a private residence for computing millionaire and current owner, Graham Wylie and his family, by 2015.

2015   
Colin & Maureen Beasley, who took over Heddon Post Office at the shops on Taberna Close in 2009, retired and unable to sell the business the Post Office was transferred to the Spar shop at Heddon Service Station.
The Post Office premises was taken by Posh Paws Dog Grooming by Amber in October 2015.

2017   
British Masters Golf Tournament at Close House, September 28th to Sunday October 1st.

2018    Prime Minister Theresa May visited Heddon-on-the-Wall St Andrew’s CofE Primary School, and met with parents, staff and children at a parent and toddler group. Her visit was part of a tour of the UK which is taking place on Thursday, March 29th 2018, to mark exactly one year to go until Brexit. Hexham Courant.
2018    Unveiling of Victrix on 22nd November 2018. The name given to the diseased horse-chestnut tree carved into the shape of a Roman Centurion.
2018    Geophysical survey of northern berm on Hadrian's Wall at Heddon on the Wall identifies cippi-pit defences as previously found at Throckley and Wallsend.

2019    New section of the lower course of Hadrian's Wall discovered beneath demolished buildings at Tulip's Yard (the former Town Farm) on 8th March 2019 and recorded by archaeologists from Wardell Armstrong. Within the old entrance on Towne Gate, just north of the Wall line was found the remains of a probably medieval corn-drying kiln.

2020 - 2030

2020    20th February:
Heddon-On-The-Wall’s Knott Memorial Hall received £17,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund. The money will be used to upgrade the building’s kitchen facilities.
2020    A planning application was approved on Monday 10th February for Heddon Juniors Football Club regarding new facilities at Sellman Park. Construction of the new ground, to be known as Victrix Park after the village’s Roman soldier sculpture, has already begun, and the car park has already been completed. The submission of the application caused a dispute with Heddon-on-the-Wall Parish Council, which stopped the club from using its facilities at Selman Park, including changing provisions, because it felt the plans were an overdevelopment of the site.
2020    March 2020 population lock-down due to worldwide pandemic of Coranavirus (Covid-19)

022    Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II
marking the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952. In UK, extra days bank holiday awarded making a four-day Jubilee bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June.
In Heddon:
Thursday 2 June - Afternoon Tea Dance & vintage vehicle display in Knott Hall from 2pm to 5pm.

Thursday 2 June - A Royal Knees Up - Kids Party in Knott Hall from 6pm to 8pm.
Join us for a disco, games and a Royal Parade dress up.
Thursday 2 June - Lighting of the Beacon at The Three Tuns - 10pm.
As one of the few villages across Hadrian's Wall we were asked to light a beacon at 10pm to celebrate the Queen.
Friday 3 June Party in the Park - Community Street Party in the Welfare Field from 2pm.
Saturday 4 June - Jubilee Celebration Art Show in WI Hall, 11am to 4pm.
Saturday 4 June - Football match: Three Tuns Regulars v Heddon United in Selman Park at 1pm.

3 September - Hadrian's Wall 1900 Festival in Heddon
8 September Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, the longest-living and longest-reigning British monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland
