It's not often these days that a stagecoach, particularly of the horse-drawn variety, passes through the village, although it would have been a regular sight in the past.The event over two days, 16-17 September 2011, was an historic coach journey following Hadrian's Wall from Newcastle to Carlisle. It was an endeavour by two families, the Bowmans and Sutherlands, raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance.
The Bowman family from Penrith are world champions in horse driving trials. They teamed up for this event with the Sutherlands from Calgary in Canada who excel in chuck-wagon racing. The Bowman's had been the first Europeans to be invited to take part in the Calgary Stampede. This was a return visit for the Canadian's and a further part of a filmed documentary conceived by the British Horse Driving Trials Association.
The stage coach used was the 'Border Union' purchased by George Bowman and Jack Collinson in 1971. It was used for a 7 day run from Edinburgh to London in 1972. There is a photo of it in Morpeth here. In 2009 (as the 'Molly Malone') it did a four day run from Limerick to Dublin raising money for the Barretstown charity.
