Heddon on the Wall Women's Institute
Heddon WI was founded in 1917 and was the first WI in Northumberland. The first meeting in that year was held at Heddon Hall, the home of Lady Wise, who was elected president. Lady Knott of Close House was elected vice-president and Mrs Anne Jordan became the secretary.
The wooden WI Hall was built in the village on land presented to them by Sir James Knott in 1922 and was officially opened by Mrs. Hugh Middleton of Belsay Castle. The hall was built for just £350 by Mr Tulip, the father of Mrs Nora Eames who was the longest serving member in 1987, having joined at the age of 14 years. Her mother, Mrs Margaret Tulip served as secretary for more than 30 years.
Heddon WI is still going strong and has a thriving membership. The ladies have just been given a lottery grant which they are using to replace the well danced-upon floor. Through their many fund raising events, money has been raised to refurbish the kitchen.
