Class photo from Heddon Primary School - late 1950s
Photograph and information kindly sent by Elizabeth Howell.
Front row Left to Right:
Linda Bell, Elizabeth Howell (me), Ann Stobo, Janet Morgan, Barbara Jolly, Christine Harle, Mary Spoor
Middle row L to R:
?, ?, Michael Anderson, William Swann, David Rees, possibly Clive.
Back row L to R:
Walter, Gillian Armitage, Victoria Blackham, Jean Tully, Paul Dean.
Michael Anderson’s family had the farm that had the foot and mouth outbreak a few years ago.
William Swann was the vicar's son living in the vicarage opposite the Knott Memorial Hall.
I think the photo was around 1958 or 59 and our teacher will have been the very strict Miss Carse. Us girls all learnt to knit and sew, starting with a pan-holder garter stitch knit, then pin-cushion and needle-case in felt ( I still have and use mine), working up to knitted grey socks! and an apron and cap in preparation for transition to secondary school in Walbottle.

This is an earlier picture circa 1958.
The school had only 2 classrooms, the larger could be divided into two. School of course now a house opposite the Swan Inn. We were mixed ages as there are two brothers in this picture and the teacher was Headmaster Mr Davidson himself. The photos were taken in the schoolyard which led directly onto the ‘Battery’ below the church leading down to the vicarage and K M Hall.
Names are not so good for this one;
Back row: L to R:
?, ?, Brian Rees, ?, Noel Taylor, Michael Anderson, ?, ?,.
Middle row L to R:
David Rees, ?, possibly Mary Spoor, pos Ann Hunter, ?, Elizabeth Howell, ?, ?,.
Front row L to R:
?, ?, ?, Penny, ?, Sheila Stobo, Irene.
Happy days, I had a very important job ‘Rain monitor’ - in the big classroom when it rained I had to put out the buckets under the leaks from the roof!
We had a school trip every year usually to the Coast. Ranged around the village on our bikes. Snow in Winter up to field gate level.
